Music wants to be free

Call me crazy, but I honestly believe this. More than merely sales, mind you, but in all aspects.

That's why I offer you mine, here, for free. Download it, share it, remix it, even re-record it. The more my music makes it's journey from ear to ear and computer to mp3 player, the more I get to share my gift with the world.

Music has been a part of human existence from it's earliest days. People gathered around a fire and hummed, sang, banged on hollowed logs and blew into shells or reeds to entertain themselves. From there it evolved into tradition, ceremony, and a way to express feeling. Because of the physical nature of sound, it cannot be controlled. Once it's out, it's out.

Until technology gave us the ability to record, the only way to experience music was to hear it performed live. Anyone who has stumbled into a drum circle, lived in an apartment building, or walked down a city street has experienced free music. When our mothers sing us lullabies, our children make up songs, our friends taunt us, our feet hit the ground, cars pass over a bridge, trains over tracks, the wind blows... music is made.

Any musician worth their salt isn't in it for the money. The enjoyment derived from making sounds you enjoy is a fundamental part of why humans make music. Anything that happens afterward is just that, an afterthought. Sure, we all need to make money, or some form of meaningful, exchangeable value, to exist in this world, but that's separate from the act of creation. Confusing the two only leads to conflict and unpleasantness.

The first time I made a sound with an instrument, there was this feeling of gratification and amazement. "Wow! I did that?" From then on I took every opportunity I could to continue making music. I would go to my friends' houses, armed with my guitar, and stay up all night writing, playing and living in sound. I would camp out in my parents' living room every weekend with a crappy condenser mic and a cassette deck and record anything and everything I could come up with.

There two basic things I realized about music, for me; I want to keep making it, and I want to keep sharing it. Music cannot be enjoyed unless it is heard, much like art cannot be appreciated until it is seen.

So go on... enjoy
